Research Interest

Dr. Joyce Davison is a Research Scientist at The Prostate Centre at Vancouver Hospital Health Sciences Centre, and Director of the Prostate Education and Research Centre. She currently holds joint appointments in both the School of Nursing and Faculty of Medicine at UBC. She has a Ph.D. in Philosophy, an undergraduate degree and Master's degree in Nursing, and has received Postdoctoral training within the Department of Family Medicine- all at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg.

Dr. Davison's research program focuses on patient-physician communication specifically in the area of treatment decision making. Research is aimed at development and evaluation of information interventions that will enable both men with cancer of the prostate and their partners to be more involved in medical decision making throughout the illness trajectory. Current projects are being conducted to identify factors influencing individual's health decisions, and the efficacy of a decision aid to promote participation in treatment decision making. Outcomes of interest include: assumed role in medical decision making, psychological distress, quality of life, decisional regret, decisional conflict and patient satisfaction. Results from the research program will be utilized to develop a comprehensive research-based education program that could be implemented in other outpatient oncology settings with this population.
